An electrical job-scope checklist
A clearer description helps a licensed contractor assess the right job and helps you compare written proposals. Use the questions below. You do not need to diagnose anything yourself.

Four short groups of facts
Use only information you already have safely. A photograph may help describe a fitting, but it cannot establish what work is needed or whether an installation complies.

The symptom or goal
- Describe what stopped working or what you want installed.
- Note which room or fitting is involved and when the issue began.
- For new equipment, have the product details and preferred position ready.
The property and access
- State whether the property is owned, rented, a unit or managed.
- Identify the person who can approve access and work.
- Mention ceiling, wall, switchboard or common-area access if you already know it may matter.
What has happened already
- Note any recent installation or previous assessment without guessing it caused the fault.
- Keep any written quote or scope you want to compare.
- Explain whether a previous repair appears to have failed, with its date and contractor details if available.
What to ask in writing
- What assessment or testing is included before a final scope is confirmed?
- Which parts, access, testing and making good are included or excluded?
- What work is required for the stated job, and what is an optional improvement?
- How would a return visit or changed scope be handled?
Example
A useful enquiry can be simple
“The safety switch has tripped twice this week and the kitchen outlets lose power. I rent, and the property manager can arrange access. Could a licensed contractor assess the cause and explain what the first visit and any repair quote would cover?”
This example is illustrative. It does not describe a real customer or establish a cause. If the situation is dangerous, use the emergency route.
Before accepting the scope
Check the actual contractor's electrical contractor licence. Confirm whether the proposal covers diagnosis, repair, required protection, testing, access, exclusions and return visits. A wider switchboard change should have its own property-specific explanation.
